Lukas Petsch Signs With the Columbus Crew Academy

Scouts singled out his speed and agility. Here's the training behind it.

LJ PERFORMANCE — MILESTONE

Lukas Petsch showed up to one of the very first camps I ever ran, on June 3, 2025. He never left. A few months ago, his dad sent us a message we’ve been sitting with ever since: Lukas had just received an offer to join the Columbus Crew’s U15 Academy. We didn’t post about it right away. We wanted to share the training story behind it, not just the news.

When the coaches made the offer, they specifically mentioned his speed and agility as part of their decision.

Sören Petsch, Lukas’s father

Lukas is 13 years old, and he’s one of the first athletes to come through LJ Performance and sign with a professional academy this early. We want to be careful about what we claim here. Signing with an academy isn’t the finish line, and Lukas’s continued development is on him, his family, and his academy coaches from here. But it’s worth pausing on, because it’s a real signal that structured, evidence-based training works, not just for professional athletes, but for the youth athletes who train the same way.

What the training actually looked like

Alongside his regular club training, Lukas came through LJP for individualized training — the same approach we use across the board: coaching judgment and objective testing working side by side, baseline testing, tracked progress over time, and training decisions shaped by both what we saw in his sessions and what the data showed.

Here’s what his testing trend looked like over the training period:

None of those trends made the signing happen on their own. Talent, coaching from his academy staff, and Lukas’s own work ethic did that. What the graphs show is that the physical qualities underneath his game, speed, change of direction, power, moved in the right direction under a system built to track them.

This is also what a coaching relationship is supposed to look like: not a program handed off and forgotten, but testing and technique reviewed together, session by session.

Why this matters beyond one athlete

Professional environments don’t pick one over the other, the eye test and objective testing work side by side. It’s how MLS staffs know whether an athlete is actually progressing or just getting older. In youth soccer, the eye test is everywhere, coaches watching, evaluating, and coaching by feel every single session, and that instinct matters and isn’t going anywhere. What’s almost always missing is the other half: the testing and tracking that would confirm what the eye sees, or catch what it misses.

Lukas isn’t a guarantee that this happens for every athlete who walks through our doors, and we don’t want to reduce his story to a data point. He’s a 13-year-old who showed up, put in the work, and built a real relationship with his coaches along the way. His testing trends confirm it: the physical qualities underneath his game moved in the right direction throughout that process — a result of the work and the relationship, not something separate from them. Talent, his academy coaches, and Lukas himself are what got him signed. The training and testing were part of that story, not the whole thing.

A milestone earned by Lukas, with his family and coaches supporting the journey. Congratulations to Lukas and the Petsch family. We’re proud to have been part of it.

And as much as this is worth celebrating, we’ll keep telling Lukas what we tell every athlete who gets to this point: what got you here won’t keep you here. Stay humble, keep evolving, and don’t get comfortable. Come Monday, this milestone goes behind us, and the work toward the next one starts again. This isn’t the finish line. It’s the beginning.

If you’d like your athlete to experience the same kind of structured, monitored training, first-time visitors are welcome to a free trial session.
